What to expect
How does it work?
1. Pre-care: assessment and planning
Before detox begins, we assess your goals, health needs and home environment to determine whether Home Detox is safe and suitable for you. If appropriate, we develop a personalised care plan to guide the process safely.
2. Detox: withdrawal support at home
During detox you receive daily in-person visits from an AOD nurse, with additional telehealth support where appropriate. Your nurse monitors withdrawal symptoms and wellbeing while working within an agreed care plan and with GP oversight.
3. Aftercare: support to stay on track
After detox, we provide ongoing support and planning to help you maintain progress. You may also choose to continue your recovery with psychological therapy through Solasta (additional costs apply).
Do I need a support person?
For safety, you must have a support person aged 18 or over who can stay with you during the withdrawal period. Your support person plays an important role in monitoring your wellbeing and seeking help if concerns arise.

Why refer to us?
Backed by research and organisational experience
Solasta’s Home Detox program builds on Sonder’s established nurse-led In-Home Withdrawal Service, which has been evaluated in peer-reviewed Australian research demonstrating the safety and feasibility of home-based withdrawal management.
Private, in-home support
Patients receive withdrawal support in the comfort and privacy of their own home. Care is delivered by experienced AOD nurses, with GP involvement in medication prescribing and clinical oversight. During detox, patients receive daily in-person nurse check-ins, with telehealth support where appropriate. Clear escalation pathways are in place if clinical risk increases.
Safe, clinically supervised care
Withdrawal support is delivered by qualified AOD nurses with medical oversight, following a structured three-stage model: Pre-care (assessment and planning), Detox (home-based withdrawal support), and Aftercare (post withdrawal support).
Continuity of care
Following detox, patients receive post-withdrawal support to help maintain progress. They may also choose to engage in ongoing psychological therapy with Solasta psychologists (additional costs apply).
Clear communication
We work collaboratively with referrers and provide clear communication and updates throughout the patient’s involvement in the program.
Patient eligibility
We welcome referrals from GPs and other health professionals for patients who may benefit from a home-based, structured detox program delivered by qualified AOD nurses.
The service is available to people aged 16 and over living in Adelaide’s southern suburbs and the Adelaide Hills. For detailed eligibility criteria, download our Information for GPs sheet.
Home detox is not suitable for all patients. Where home-based withdrawal is not appropriate, we will discuss alternative pathways and support referral to higher levels of care, including hospital-based services.

Who can access Home Detox?
Home Detox is designed for people aged 16+ living in Adelaide’s southern suburbs or Adelaide Hills who are looking for a safe, supportive way to withdraw from alcohol or other drugs at home. You can check your eligibility here.
Is Home Detox safe?
Yes — your safety is our top priority. The program is delivered by qualified AOD nurses who are trained to manage withdrawal symptoms and provide clinical oversight throughout the process.
Home Detox is only offered when it is clinically appropriate, and every person completes a comprehensive assessment prior to starting the program. Before detox begins, we assess your physical and mental health, substance use history, withdrawal risks, home environment and the availability of a support person. Home detox is not suitable for everyone. If we determine that a higher level of care would be safer, we will discuss alternative options and support you to access appropriate services.
During detox, care is nurse-led, with medical oversight provided by a GP. Withdrawal symptoms are monitored during daily check-ins and care plans are adjusted if required. Where clinically indicated, withdrawal medications are prescribed by a GP and used as part of your planned detox pathway.
Clear escalation processes are in place. If symptoms increase or safety concerns arise, we will take appropriate steps, including supporting transfer to hospital-based or inpatient services if needed.
What substances are supported?
Home detox may be suitable for people withdrawing from alcohol, stimulants and cannabis.
Suitability depends on individual clinical assessment and safety considerations.
What if I don’t have a regular GP, or I don’t want my regular GP involved in the detox?
If you do not have a regular GP or would prefer to work with a different GP for the purposes of your detox, team will help you find one who can support you throughout the program.
How will I get my withdrawal medication?
Withdrawal medications will be prescribed by a GP.
You and your support person will be responsible for purchasing, collecting and managing any medications prescribed to you.
What if I don’t have a support person?
If you don’t have a support person in mind, we will not be able to progress and begin the program.
What happens after detox?
After detox, you’ll continue to be supported in aftercare by the AOD clinician and AOD nurse. You’ll have the option to continue your recovery with Solasta’s psychologists for additional support (at an additional cost). We’re here to help you stay on track.
How much does it cost?
The total cost for the Home Detox program is $3,500. This fee includes Pre-care, Detox, and Aftercare support. Medications are not included (purchased via pharmacy). Optional psychological therapy services are available at additional cost.
Medicare does not fund private home detox programs, however, some associated medical services such as GP consultations may attract a Medicare rebate. Some withdrawal-related medications may be subsidised through the PBS.
Can I use my private health fund to cover the costs of detox?
Private health insurance does not usually cover independent home-based detox services. Some health funds offer their own funded programs or hospital-substitute models for eligible members. We recommend that you check directly with your private health fund to confirm your individual eligibility and level of cover.
Our team can help you understand your options and any Medicare or PBS rebates that may apply.
Can I work while undertaking home detox?
Some people may be able to take time away from work during detox, while others may continue working in a limited or modified way. This depends on the substance involved, the severity of withdrawal symptoms, the medications prescribed and the type of work that you do.
For safety reasons we generally recommend planning for reduced commitments or time away from work, particularly during the withdrawal phase. Roles that involve driving, operating machinery, high levels of responsibility, or safety-critical tasks may not be suitable during detox.
We’ll talk this through with you during assessment and help you plan detox at a time that best supports your health and safety.
Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.
